"Your Light"

As soon as you hit the homepage of this website, you see a big, "Album Coming Soon" banner, right? Well, this is the first song off the album, and was the main song from the Kickstarter campaign that made it all possible. It has a pretty cool story behind it as well...

I have a friend who has an awesome voice and a great gift for melody. He came over one day to play some music and we went to the garage to jam. I started playing a pretty simple chord structure with some hammer-ons to add effect, and he jumped on a floor tom just to bang on something. Some mumbled melodies came out that just fit so well, and so we went with it.

As for lyrics, we both were struggling with the idea of pursuing creative projects while balancing God's involvement in them. Questions like, how much time is this art worth verses investing in God's Kingdom? Are the two mutually exclusive, or can they work together? How much of our identities are wrapped up in creating art that may be misplaced? The struggle is well-documented on this blog, and something I still deal with. I love this song, because it captures that tension so well, but ultimately is a prayer to God, asking him to shine down his light of truth into our lives, exposing that shadows that don't belong, and illuminating the rest.

I don't often play this song live, but felt it was a good one for this show from last February. This is a shorter version than the album features, which you can hear here.

Your light, shines like
A beacon, in the night sky
Sometimes, I find
It fading, in my mind

Woah, where are You now?
Woah, where are You now?

My dreams, blind me
From Your light, beside me
Make me, take me
To the place, where You'll be

Woah, where are You now?
Woah, I think I found, You out

Light. Shine. Down.
Light. Shine. Down.
Take away my selfish gain, take me to that place
Light. Shine. Down.

It's not, my thoughts
That take me, to where You are
I need, a faith seed
To grow deep, inside me

Woah,  here You are now?
Woah, I think I found, You out

Light. Shine. Down.
Light. Shine. Down.
Take away my selfish plans, replace them with Your open hand
Light. Shine. Down

Your light, shines like
A beacon, in the dark skies
Find me, guide me
Safely, through rough seas

Your light, shines like
The north star, In lost times
You save me, raise me
To Your place, where I can see

Light. Shine. Down.
Light. Shine. Down.
Make my path the same as Yours, where every step I can be sure
Light. Shine. Down
