The Light EP - "Your Light"

In case you haven't noticed the images and little listen-boxes plastered all over this website, I released an album recently! I thought it would be fun to share the story from each song, along with a video you can listen to. Here goes, track number one: "Your Light."

This song kind of started by accident. My good friend Zach came over one day and we went out in the garage and started playing music. He had sung in a hardcore band years prior, so we had always talked about starting something, but it never really came to fruition...until now.

I put a capo on the fourth fret and started jamming on C and Am with a hammer-on with the first finger. Sounded pretty cool. He started mumbling some lyrics that fit, and playing a floor tom I had set up nearby. The mumblings turned into lyrics and melodies, which I made sure to write down, because I could tell this was turning into a cool song. Zach has the great gift for melody and a beautiful tone to his voice, which you can hear a little bit in the original demo here.

Lyrically, "Your Light" deals with the struggle of pursuing God while also pursuing a creative living. Zach is an actor, artist, photographer and all-around creative guy. If you read this blog, you know I'm not so different, and that I often get a little too wrapped up in trying to make one of them a job, forgetting my first love. It's a frequently addressed topic on this website, and so this song really epitomizes the tension involved.

That night, we ended with a verse, pre-chorus and chorus, but I knew I wanted to finish the song. I took what we started with and made sure to write it all out, adding a layered bridge that Alex Barker really shines on in the album. I tried to get Zach on the album version, but alas, he lives in another state and it just didn't work out. The song wouldn't exist without him though, and for that, as well as his friendship, I am extremely grateful.

"Your Light" was the title track for the Kickstarter campaign we did to fund the album. As a result, you can hear it in about ten different places. Below is the album version, and I'll link to some others below in case you're interested.

LYRICS
Your light, shines like
A beacon, in the night sky
Sometimes, I find
It fading, in my mind

Woah, where are You now?
Woah, where are You now?

My dreams, blind me
From Your light, beside me
Make me, take me
To the place, where You'll be

Woah, where are You now?
Woah, I think I found, You out

Light. Shine. Down.
Light. Shine. Down.
Take away my selfish gain, take me to that place
Light. Shine. Down.

It's not, my thoughts
That take me, to where You are
I need, a faith seed
To grow deep, inside me

Woah,  here You are now?
Woah, I think I found, You out

Light. Shine. Down.
Light. Shine. Down.
Take away my selfish plans, replace them with Your open hand
Light. Shine. Down

Your light, shines like
A beacon, in the dark skies
Find me, guide me
Safely, through rough seas

Your light, shines like
The north star, In lost times
You save me, raise me
To Your place, where I can see

Light. Shine. Down.
Light. Shine. Down.
Make my path the same as Yours, where every step I can be sure
Light. Shine. Down
