The Last Video Store

Image
Since moving back to my hometown, I often drive by what used to be Hollywood Video on Highway 61. Right before that is the Blockbuster Video where I worked for over a year right after college. Immediately I am stricken with nostalgia, remembering the Friday nights where my family would often go out to eat, and then stop by the video store to get a game or a movie. I loved the unknown of the video store, not sure what they would have in stock, but hoping for something good. Hollywood Video in particular had an excellent kung fu selection, and was where I learned to love Jet Li's extensive repertoire, particularly this one : I lament the loss of these stores, and even more so the experience my kids will never have! Downloading digital copies or streaming movies just isn't the same, and removes the element of the unknown that is so exciting and in-the-moment! Of course this is a concept that we will become more and more familiar with, as Amazon Prime, rampant free two-d...

Follow Me

Image
Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.  (1 Corinthians 11:1) I've found that when you want to do something, it's best with people, but also best not to wait around for those people. This applies heavily to skating and surfing, particularly in your 30s. I'm notoriously bad about planning a little surf excursion and then inviting everyone I know to join. However, sometimes you invite all your friends and no one wants to join, or everyone is too busy, or it's cold and the waves are bad. In these cases, it's easy to call it a day and play  surf video games  instead. But too much of that, and you've lost all the surf-muscles you've built up, and before you know it you weig...

Night Surfing

Image
We've all seen the epic  night surf scene  in Point Break, right? A new world of surfing was opened up recently when some friends invited me on a Super-moon Surf. There are a lot of benefits to night surfing, including fewer people and awakened instincts due to the lack of sight. I've made a few mistakes on the nocturnal way though, so I thought I'd share a few tips for going on a night surf: Courtesy of Inlet Charley's Surf Shop (inletcharleyssurf.tumblr.com) First, try and schedule your surf on a full moon. I've been out before the moon rises and can say, firsthand, that it makes a huge difference. It's also an amazing sight to see a big red moon rise over the city while you're out on the water with just a few trusted friends, which brings me to my next tip... Always night surf with friends. It's a bit dangerous out there because you often can't see the waves or other surfers until they're a few yards away. You need guys around...
